Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these drugs need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
