Sir Gareth Southgate has declared that he is not pursuing a return to football management, noting that it would be tough to duplicate the unique sense of purpose he felt as head of the Three Lions.

Southgate expressed his plan to focus his energy toward supporting the youth and countering what he described as a pervasive negative narrative presently found in the country.

Exploring Different Paths Away from Football

In a recent radio interview, the manager was asked about rumors linking him with vacant management roles in the top flight and abroad.

“Leading my country gave my work in football a deeper meaning and purpose,” he replied. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

Commitment to Positive Examples

Prior to the release of his upcoming book, his leadership-focused book, Southgate stated that he is “very passionate” about providing role models for teenagers, utilizing experiences from his tenure as England’s men’s football manager from 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

He feels that his time managing the squad, during which the team transformed from being widely disliked to greatly admired, holds general lessons.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he noted. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Raising Children and Influencing Youth

Drawing on his family life, the coach observed: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He added: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Unity Over Discord

Southgate insisted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the societal attention often highlights disagreement.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he stated. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

His upcoming publication, the book Dear England, is set to present further insights on management and country pride based on his distinguished time in football.
