"When are you interviewing the Haim sisters?" a message pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a key snag: The author likewise wants to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Several famous fans have openly coveted the honor.

The evidence suggests something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

Like all the best bands, they're a inseparable unit. Their music videos frequently feature them striding in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such pure exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that fans told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the biggest honor. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire others to start a band."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the next part of the family."

Grammy Nod

The band have called into home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the honor is deeply felt by the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major achievement," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the women that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The record came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that unique transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The lyrics detail departures and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them working out in real life who they want to be.

"I love summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed resilience required a different sonic direction – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Camaraderie

The band's candor fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Legacy

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide audience.

Yet Haim will forever be their top priority.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was four," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
